History

The house was entirely surrounded by trees and was non-descript from the street. We must have passed it a hundred times but one day my husband took a closer look and realized that several of the exterior features which seemed to be from the 1920s were in fact far far older than that and he became very interested in finding out more about the house. Also, it sits on a prominent corner across from the oldest public square in the city.

We purchased the house for several reasons,

  • 1. We believe that most old houses are torn down simply because people don't have the imagination to see them as they might be,
  • 2. We wanted to help resurrect a portion of Manhattan's history as an inspiration to other "urban homesteaders" in an area that had long been neglected and
  • 3. To live in a home that was within walking distance from shops, schools, our church, the post office and nearly everything we need thereby dramatically reducing the amount we would have to drive and increasing dramatically the amount of exercise we would get in an average week—or at least compared to what we did when we lived in a suburb!
